Post Race Report - Teton Ridge Classic - IN#2

Posted on January 14th, 2008

Last Saturday, 210 classic racers toed the line for the 2008 Teton Ridge Classic.  A 5km, 14km and 28km race was offered and people from Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah and Alaska came out in droves to test themselves.  While there were quite a few hard-cores there to battle, most of the participants were just there to tour the course and take in the Teton Mountains.  I also believe this is the only race in the country that is sponsored by two micro-breweries.  Idaho Nordic did some indepth testing and the Snake River Lager provided the best recovery.
At race time the snow temp was 22 and air was 27.  All of the previous week’s heavy snow had been transformed into a hard and blistering fast track.  In the 28km race the opening kilometer trimmed the field down to 9 men.  From there it was just a steady fast effort and one by one the men were shelled out the back.  When it was all done Chad Anderson of Bozeman, MT took top honors followed by Jason Ray and then Dan Struebel to round out the top three.  Again, simple waxing was the answer to fast skis.  Swix LF6 and LF7 both ran great with V40 as the choice kicker.

Results and pictures can be found at www.tetonridgeclassic.com

ChadAndersonRaceWinnerRace Winner, Chad Anderson, is not shy about his cowboy roots.  He later rode that trusty steed on a victory lap and then back home to Bozeman.

Swix Race Service Report - Teton Ridge Classic

Posted on January 10th, 2008

January 12, 2008 -

Race #2 in the 2008 Idaho Nordic Race Series

Event: Teton Ridge Classic at Teton Ridge Ranch, Driggs, ID
Race Time: 10:00 Sat. Jan 12, 2008

Forecast from NOAA(as of Thursday AM):
Friday Night: Low of 13 F
Saturday: High of approx. 29F. Cloudy with a chance of snow possible

Base Prep: If skis bases are dirty, clean skis with Swix CH10.  Scrape and brush using Course Bronze Brush (T158) or Fine Steel brush (T192).

Glide Wax
Race Wax: Brush skis with Swix Med Bronze Brush (T162) tip to tail 10 repetitions.  Apply Swix LF6. Iron in at 140C, 5 seconds tip to tail x 3 repetitions.   Cool ski 5 minutes and then scrape and brush with Swix Med Course Brush (T162) x 10 repetitions tip to tail followed by the Swix Blue Nylon Polish Brush (T160) x 10 repetitions tip to tail.
***With the higher humidity, HF6 may be faster if we get new snow the morning of the race, but LF6 is the safer bet.

Structure: Swix Super Riller T401 with .33mm linear rill. Apply rill after you have finished scraping and brushing.

Kick Wax
Kick Zone Prep: Sand kick zone with 100 grit sandpaper – linear motion ONLY!  Apply a thin layer of Swix VG35 ironed in at 110C.
Race Kick WaxSwix VR40.  Testing will be taking place up to the start.Apply race kick wax at site using the Power Pyramid.  If there are large amounts of new snow and your wax is “shearing” and losing kick, try a longer, not thicker, wax pocket before going to a warmer wax.SWIX Race Service is there to help!!  If you have questions we are always happy to guide you down the path of fast and correctly waxed skis.

Notes: This is a beautiful course with narrow trails placed through rolling terrain. The hills are long and gradual with fun curvy descents. The trail is reminiscent of the type of trail that existed before skating—fun trails winding their way through the woods!!

Southeast Boise Sprint - Post Race Report

Posted on January 9th, 2008

Eighteen fierce competitors braved the dangerous streets of Boise to take part in the first ever, “Southeast Boise Sprints”.

The fastest prologue time was laid down by Big D Hegerle.  Once the times were collected, teams of four were formed based on thier respective prologue time.  Each skier suffered through three .5km laps on the world class terrain and grooming at Simplot Soccer Complex.  When the dust settled the Cera Effer’s took home the prize of 160 ounces of cold Rocky Mountain Coors.  Over 300 ounces of beer was awarded and thanks to our premier sponsor, SWIX, we gave away some great flappy hats and Matt is now a metrosexual.

 Finish Crowd

Cera Effer’s - 1st place (Carol Severa, Daryl Hegerle, Matt Fethke and Philthy)

 Cera Effers

Huma Greens - 2nd place (Carl Hoerger, The Keizer, Jessica Jensen and Jeff Cramer)

 Black Devils

The O’Duelers - 3rd Place (Sean O’Shea, Clyde the Glide, Mike Weber, Matt Newbill)

Prairie Creek Post Race Report/Results - Race #1 IN Series

Posted on January 7th, 2008

Prairie Creek Snowmaker lived up to its name.  Two feet of new snow was no obstacle for the Idaho’s longest running classic race.  The North Valley Grooming Crew transformed the massive amount of snow into a strip of fresh corduroy and race line tracks around the 7.5km loop for the 72 participants.  Many thanks go out to Elephant’s Perch owner and race promoter, Bob Rosso, who pulled off the impossible.
Race time temps were 23 snow and 29 air.  Due to snow shear the on-site Swix Tech Team recommended VR40 with an elongated front kick zone with HF7BD for glide.  This proved to be the winning recommendation as Swix Tech Team member, Eric Jensen won the race, followed by Swix Tech Joe Jensen and third went to junior skier Connor Brown of  SVSEF.
The woman’s race was won by Muffy Ritz followed by Abbie Harris and Susan Thoreson.
Every participant will receive Idaho Nordic Series points in their respective age class.

Race Time: 11:00
Forecast: Friday night is expected to be cloudy with lows of 27F. Sat. highs will be near 30F with high winds and a chance of snow.
Ski Selection: Your favorite hard wax classic ski.
Base Prep: Clean glide zone of classic skis by brushing 10 strokes with the medium bronze brush(T160). Clean kick zone with Swix base cleaner and Fiberlene, sand kick zone with 100 grit sandpaper in Linear Motion.
Structure: Fine linear. Can be applied with the Swix Super Riller using the fine .5mm blade.

GLIDE WAX
Race Wax: Apply Swix LF7. Scrape with a sharp scraper and brush with the medium bronze brush(T160). Final brushing can be done with the Blue Nylon or Horsehair brushes.
For faster skis apply Swix HF7 or HF7BD after base prep as described above.
For the ultimate ski and to catch the eye of the Olympic Selection Committee, apply a final coat of FC7!!

KICK WAX
Binder Wax: Apply VG35, iron in and cork smooth. Let cool.
Race Wax: Apply thin layers of VR45 or V45 kick wax using the POWER PYRAMID. If more glide is desired you may wax with VR40 or V40 and cover with a cushion of VR45. Some final testing and experimentation may be necessary depending on actual temperature and snow conditions resulting from the forecast storm.

Notes: Tracks may be soft on freshly fallen snow. In these conditions it may be useful to extend the kick zone for a little extra grip to fight the snow shear. The course is also hilly allowing for a great workout and a fun race. Have a fun race on one of the most beautiful courses in the country!
