We have exciting volunteer experiences for you on Saturday. BBNT is hosting the Bogus Challenge this Saturday, Dec. 22nd and are in need of some volunteers to help out. Specifically they need Course Marshals and Starter/Timers. We would need you to meet upstairs in the lodge at 9:00. Races start at 10am.
If you want to volunteer please e-mail ejensen@aceco.com and I will let BBNT know you are going to help out. Below are the job descriptions. Thank you!
Job Description: Race Timers/ Course Marshals
Race timers will have crew of at least three people.1. When all timers are accounted for the race secretary can meet with the whole group to go over the: race course, start times, grooming report, hazards, and concerns about the course. (We are most concerned with safety of racers as well as patrons.)
Timing Crew Outline:
Chief of Timing (also a spotter or a recorder)
Spotter X 1
Recorder X 2
Chief of timing:
The chief of timing will be the contact with the race secretary to finalize any registration nuances, course details like hazards and tricky corners, and start times. He/she then relays this information to the rest of the timing crew. The chief of timing should also be responsible for calling the racers to the starting line and then giving them the “race talk” on safety, double poling, and course directions.
Before each race starts the chief of timing will call all of the racers in that group to the start line. When everyone is at the line he/she will go over the race course in detail along with course directions, starting commands and starting procedure. In a skate race we usually have the racers double pole a certain distance, usually about 50M, before they skate so the field spreads out. (Example: “The command will be ready, set, go; on go please make sure that you double pole to the line/flags 50M up the trail. After that skate away, and make sure that you take that certain left hand turn carefully because there isn’t very much snow.”)
Spotter:
It tends to work well to have one person spotting bibs before the finish line and calling the numbers back to the people who record finish times.
Recorders:
The recorders will be responsible to write the finishing time of the bib down in the correct place. We will have the timing sheets that you can fill out as people finish. It will be a simple spread sheet with columns for: name, age, gender, bib number, start time, and finish time. The timers can fill out the start time and the finish time, the registration volunteers will fill out the rest.
Course Marshals:
Course Marshals will know the course in detail and be directed to control a designated intersection on the course to direct racers. Course Marshals will ski out to the specified location. More importantly marshals will warn recreational skiers that a race is in progress.
