Master Nationals Report

Posted on March 30th, 2007

?Ǭ†

?Ǭ†?Ǭ†?Ǭ† Masters National Championships ended last week in sunny?¢‚Ǩ¬¶then rainy?¢‚Ǩ¬¶..then snowy Bend, Oregon.?Ǭ† Eleven Idaho Nordic members competed over the four day event that included a Skiathlon, Classic and Skate competition for each age class.?Ǭ†
?Ǭ†?Ǭ†?Ǭ† For the second year in a row, Joe Jensen won all three events in the M1 age group and was named to the US Masters Ski Team for the 2008 season.?Ǭ† Due to the complicated wax conditions Joe was able to rely on his Swix Tech Team of Jack Hart and Kevin Sweeney to out kick and out glide the other competitors.
?Ǭ†?Ǭ†?Ǭ† Liz Cody made the podium in the Classic and Skate races.?Ǭ† From her years of experience, Liz stayed composed and smooth throughout all of her races.?Ǭ† When the snow became shin-deep slush, Liz concentrated on proper technique and efficiency while her competitors struggled.?Ǭ† There is a great picture of Liz at www.swixracing.us/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=137&Itemid=7
Note the upright body and forward flexed ankles.?Ǭ† Looks like those Wednesday night bounding drills!
?Ǭ†?Ǭ† Ralph Comstock won the award for best product tester.?Ǭ† In the classic race he broke his 1970 era Ski Art poles and in the skate race he broke his brand new Rossignols.

Ullr Results

Posted on March 14th, 2007

A few of the Idaho Nordicans ventured to Logan for the infamous Ullr.?Ǭ† They have always done things a little differently in Utah but?Ǭ†we did find beer and a good italian meal with opera music?Ǭ†the night before the race.?Ǭ† Also we learned that they do not provide bathrooms at the start area.?Ǭ† We debated to use our socks as a wiper or not to wipe at all.?Ǭ†?Ǭ†Blistered feet or chafed underside????Ǭ†?Ǭ†Fortunately?Ǭ†I have?Ǭ†small children and had a stash of baby wipes in?Ǭ†my ski bag.?Ǭ† (I think we repaid the snowmobilers everytime they have run us off trails - 100 pre-race purges scattered?Ǭ†in their parking lot.?Ǭ† Nasty!)

The race consisted of 2,200 feet of steady climbing in about 10km?Ǭ†and then?Ǭ†a?Ǭ†slow?Ǭ†decent with some obstacles -?Ǭ†moguls, fog, knee deep powder and snowmobilers that wanted to play chicken.?Ǭ† Daryl Hegerle summoned his previous life spirit as a billy-goat and destroyed the field at about 10km into the race and reduced the lead pack to five skiers.?Ǭ†?Ǭ†Elite skiers Ian Harvey, Jason Travis and Paul Clark made numerous attacks trying to shake Daryl and the short fat dude in the back (Joe Jensen).?Ǭ† When it was all over Jason Travis soloed to a win with Ian Harvey(Toko) and Joe Jensen(Swix Tech Team)?Ǭ†close behind.

Other Notables:

Daryl Hegerle finished 5th overall and won the 40 year old age groupers

Carl Hoerger and Mike Weber held hands across the finish line.

Philthy O’Bryan?Ǭ†survived and then caught a flight to Vegas.?Ǭ† He needed to do some sinnin’.

Ralph Comstock and Raliegh Jensen were the elder statesmen to keep us on track.

The Ullr Chase 40Km Freestyle Nordic Ski Race

Posted on February 10th, 2007

March 10, 2007 -

?Ǭ†

?Ǭ†Who is Ullr (Ooler)?

Ullrllr is the name given to the Nordic God of Skis. Every winter he descends from the north country to show his skill on the mountain slopes. When winter is over, however, Ullr retreats northward before the Spring thaw. On March 10th, 2007, Utah State University Campus Recreation and Nordic United will be hosting a 40K cross-country ski race in the heart of northern Utah’s beautiful Bear River Range. This race provides a chance to match skill to skill as contestants chase Ullr in his northward retreat.

Thanks to the generous sponsors in 2006 there were $600 of cash prizes awarded to overall and gender/age group winners and equipment. We expect as many donations as last year, if not more, and anyone who enters the race will receive a drawing ticket for a chance to win outdoor requipment at the awards banquet.

The course starts and ends up Logan Canyon approximately 25 miles from Logan proper. The starting line is in Franklin Basin and the finish is at the Beaver Creek Campground Parking Lot, just down the road from Beaver Mountain Ski Resort.
