MBSEF to Host AXCS National Masters Championships in Bend, Oregon

Posted on February 28th, 2007

American Cross Country Skiers (AXCS) and The Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation (MBSEF) will host the 2007 National Masters Cross Country Skiing Championships on Mt. Bachelor?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s Nordic trail system, March 21-25.?Ǭ† The event will offer classic, skate, skiathlon and relay races and serve as the U.S. National Championship for citizen skiers age 25 and older.
?Ǭ†

Ben Husaby, MBSEF Nordic Director, says snow conditions will be ideal for the event.?Ǭ† ?¢‚Ǩ?ìWhile most of the country has struggled with low snow conditions, we?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢re lucky that Mt. Bachelor has had consistent snowfall throughout the winter and the latest storm has dumped over two feet of powder.?¢‚Ǩ? Husaby encourages potential racers to visit www.mtbachelor.com to preview conditions. ?¢‚Ǩ?ìWe?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢re hoping that people come to Bend for these races and get their fill of the skiing and snow conditions that they?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve been missing out on in many places throughout the country,?¢‚Ǩ? said Husaby. ?¢‚Ǩ?ìBesides racing on exciting courses in excellent conditions, skiers will enjoy the National Masters social gatherings and outings as well as great restaurants and shopping. Bend is truly a great place to visit in the spring.?¢‚Ǩ?

According to event promoter J.D. Downing, the National Masters event is scheduled at the end of the race season to minimize conflicts with ski marathons and regional races. Also, the schedule has been condensed so that racers can take part in the event and miss only 3 weekdays from home or work. Downing also notes that the National Masters event is a good tune up for individuals who may race in the World Masters Championships which will be just next-door in McCall, Idaho in 2008.
?Ǭ†

Complete event information for the 2007 National Masters Championships is available at www.xcskiworld.com. Click on Performance and follow the 2007 National Master Link. Online registration is set up at www.mbsef.org Click on the Nordic Races link. Entries can also be printed and mailed. All profits will benefit the junior racing programs of MBSEF. ?Ǭ†
?Ǭ†

Volunteers are needed for both events. If you wish to volunteer on March 21, 22, 23, 24 or 25 you will receive an Alpine day pass or two Nordic day passes to Mt. Bachelor for each day that you volunteer.
?Ǭ†

All questions can be directed to the MBSEF Nordic Department at (541) 388-0002. Any questions regarding registration and volunteers can be addressed to the race administrator Knut Joslin at kjoslin@mbsef.org

The Ullr Chase 40Km Freestyle Nordic Ski Race

Posted on February 10th, 2007

March 10, 2007 -

?Ǭ†

?Ǭ†Who is Ullr (Ooler)?

Ullrllr is the name given to the Nordic God of Skis. Every winter he descends from the north country to show his skill on the mountain slopes. When winter is over, however, Ullr retreats northward before the Spring thaw. On March 10th, 2007, Utah State University Campus Recreation and Nordic United will be hosting a 40K cross-country ski race in the heart of northern Utah’s beautiful Bear River Range. This race provides a chance to match skill to skill as contestants chase Ullr in his northward retreat.

Thanks to the generous sponsors in 2006 there were $600 of cash prizes awarded to overall and gender/age group winners and equipment. We expect as many donations as last year, if not more, and anyone who enters the race will receive a drawing ticket for a chance to win outdoor requipment at the awards banquet.

The course starts and ends up Logan Canyon approximately 25 miles from Logan proper. The starting line is in Franklin Basin and the finish is at the Beaver Creek Campground Parking Lot, just down the road from Beaver Mountain Ski Resort.

Demong & Dong top 2007 BMT

Posted on February 6th, 2007

Ketchum, ID (Feb. 3) Nordic Combined skier and SWIX Athlete, Billy Demong, skied away from the field to claim the victory of the 32nd running of the Boulder Mountain Tour.

The Boulder is notorious for it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s sprint finishes due to the lack of climbs making it very difficult to break the field apart. Demong threw conventional wisdom out the window and crushed the deepest field ever at the Boulder Mountain Tour. The breakaway came early in the race as Demong followed Carl Swenson through the first preem at 15km. With a slight gap on the field, Demong skied by Swenson and told him to keep going. At that point, Swenson just watched as Demong skied off into the sunset to claim his title. With a slight tailwind, Demong skied the rest of the race solo and ended up winning by a minute and twenty- three seconds. (See Billy?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s Bio under SWIX athletes) FSX skier Zach Violett was second followed by Alpina?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s Marshall Greene.

On the women?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s side, Alpina?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s Evelyn Dong of Bend, OR also skied away from the lead women?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s pack. Evelyn skied so fast that she was able to leapfrog through half the men?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s elite field that had a one-minute head start to stomp the women?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s competition. Evelyn was over three minutes ahead of second place Kate Pearson and third place Inge Travis to round out the women?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s podium.

While the air temperatures were hovering around 20 degrees throughout the course the snow temperature was 2 degrees at race time. Despite the warm air temperatures the abrasive snow required a cold wax as recommended by the Swix Tech Team. The conditioning of the base with CH4 and then doing a race layer of HF4BD proved to be fast and durable.

Eight members from Swix Racing Service provided in-depth wax testing, wax consultation and race support to make this one of the fastest and easiest Boulders in recent memory. Testing started Wednesday and ran through Saturday morning. When it was all done, the original and only recommendation from Swix proved to be the fastest with a fine structure. Swix also provided pole support to the eight hundred skiers to make sure a busted pole did not ruin their day.

Early in the race Rossignol?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s Josh Smullin broke a pole. Josh skied about 5km without a pole and came into the Prairie Creek aid station screaming for a replacement. The quick footwork of the Swix Tech Team Member Eric Jensen got Josh a pole without him breaking a stride. Josh skied to an impressive 7th place.

A big thanks to all of the Swix Racing Service members that made it a great weekend:
Kevin Sweeney ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú Director, Course Race Support
Jack Hart - Wax testing, Expo, Course Race Support
Eric Jensen - Structure Testing, Pole Sprinter, Course Race Support
Kris Thoreson - Expo, Elephants Perch wax clinic, 113th overall
Joe Jensen ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú Prairie Creek man of the people, 45th overall
Melody Scheefer - Wax testing, 5th woman overall
Barbro Hatlevik - Clinics, 8th woman overall
Isaac Wilson - Clinics, 44th overall

Also a big thanks to the residents of the Wood River Valley for producing the largest Nordic ski race in the Northwest.
