Take AIM! Maximize Your XC Skiing Experience
Posted on November 26th, 2006

It is not very often that you see big changes in a relatively small sport such as cross country skiing. However, with the help of two well known master skiers, a new opportunity will be offered to the public to enhance the enjoyment of the sport.
Jim Fredericks, coach, racer, and former Nordic race director for Rossignol Ski Company examined a coaching technique that has been relatively ignored by the Nordic environment. Coming from a background in video production, Fredericks incorporated a computer analyzation program that is currently being used by many of the world’s top athletes in various sports. Teaming up with Jon Engen, 3 time Olympian and 8 time world master champion, the two have developed a teaching method called AIM (an acronym for Athletic Imagery Method). AIM utilizes technique video of a subject and feeds it into Dartfish, a computer analyzation program that objectively evaluates various aspects of technique. Fredericks and Engen will utilize the computerized imaging tools to give direct feedback to the athlete. Correct body position, timing, and balance can be easily visualized by any athlete after viewing their technique breakdown via video screen with the various Dartfish tools. For example, a comparison can be made of two skiers’ techniques via Split Screen analysis and by charting positions and angles. Using the SimuCam tool, two athlete images can be overlaid on one another to show differences in body positioning, force generation, and timing. Stromation can be helpful in examining body positions throughout phases of technique as the subject is broken down into multiple images on a single video screen. With the use of measurement and other graphic tools, the athlete will easily see where corrections can be made. With this valuable computer feedback, AIM coaches will analyze Dartfish footage and make recommendation for technical corrections and the use of specific drills to rectify problems.
Tamarack Resort in Donnelly, ID will be the site of the first “AIM” Master XC Ski-Retreat on Dec 7-10. The retreat is for any individual who has a passion for improving classic or skate techniques for training, racing, or for anyone looking to enjoy more efficient skiing. The AIM Retreat will be an upscale opportunity for participants to experience some of Idahos finest food, lodging, and XC skiing, while making significant improvements in technique and training. All retreat participants will receive a personalized DVD of their technique analysis along with drills on how to make the needed corrections. Participants will also receive an AIM Retreat jacket and other items offered by the sponsors that include Rossignol, VOmax Clothing, Toko, and Vasa Trainer.

Swix Racing Tech Tip 1
Posted on November 26th, 2006
Now is the time to get your entire ski related gear organized for the upcoming ski season. In order to have your personal wax collection ready take an inventory of everything you have left from last year. Attached is the ideal wax solution for the snow conditions we experience in Southern Idaho skiing.
The attached document is by Joe Jensen. Joe is the president of the Idaho Nordic Ski Club spreading his passion for Nordic skiing. Starting out in Nordic skiing Joe had to continually count on veterans of the sport to help him figure it out, now he is dedicated to repay the sport. In 2006, Joe won the pursuit, classic and skate races at the Master Nationals for the 30-34 age group due to a little luck and fast skis.
